Install guide · v3.15.4

Up and running in a few minutes

Two files, one application password, one MCP registration. Everything else is reads and dry-runs until you decide to write.

  1. Install the WordPress plugin

Download agenticwp.zip and upload it in WP Admin → Plugins → Add New → Upload. Activate it. Nothing changes on the frontend; the plugin only registers REST routes under /wp-json/agenticwp/v1/.

  2. Add your license key (for writes)

Settings → AgenticWP → paste the key → Save → Verify. Reads work without a key. Keys and sites are managed in the license portal.

  3. Create an application password

Users → Profile → Application Passwords → name it "AgenticWP". The user needs the manage_options capability. This is the only credential the agent ever receives.

  4. Install the MCP server

Download agenticwp-mcp.zip, unzip, run install.sh (Linux, macOS) or install.bat (Windows). It checks Python 3.10+, creates a virtual environment, installs the two dependencies, asks for the site URL, user and application password, and writes .mcp.json. Templates: Linux / macOS, Windows.

  5. Register it in your AI tool

Claude Code: claude mcp add agenticwp <venv python> <path>/server.py -e WP_URL=… -e WP_USER=… -e WP_APP_PASSWORD=…. Cursor, Windsurf, Cline, Zed, Continue: paste the same command and env into their MCP settings. One server per site; name them after the site (agenticwp-live, agenticwp-staging) and set AGENTICWP_CONNECTION_NAME so the agent can tell them apart.

  6. Give the agent the rules and the skill

The ZIP contains agent-rules/ with ready-made context files (CLAUDE.md, .cursorrules, .windsurfrules, .clinerules, copilot-instructions.md, CONVENTIONS.md) and agent-rules/skills/agenticwp/, the job-loop skill. Copy the rules file into your project and the skill folder into ~/.claude/skills/ (or your tool's equivalent). First prompt: "run agent_context and site_health_report".

Requirements

  • WordPress 6.0+ and PHP 7.4+ on the site
  • Python 3.10+ on the machine that runs the agent
  • A user with manage_options and an application password
  • Elementor and WooCommerce are optional; tools detect what is installed
  • Works behind Cloudflare and on managed hosts; plain permalinks are handled automatically
